FIDE World Amateur Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2026 Registration Open

Chess players from around the world now have a new opportunity to compete on the international stage. Registration is currently open for the inaugural FIDE World Amateur Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2026.

The event is open to amateur players with a FIDE rating below 2300 and will take place in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.

Tournament Dates and Venue

The championship will be held from August 1 to August 8, 2026. Players will arrive on August 1, while departures are scheduled for August 8.

Who Can Participate?

All players must be registered through their national chess federations. FIDE Member Federations can enter an unlimited number of players, giving amateurs from every country the chance to compete.

Rating Categories

The championships will feature separate Open and Women’s sections in the following rating categories:

  • Under 2300
  • Under 2000
  • Under 1700

A separate Women’s Championship will be organized in each category if at least 20 players from a minimum of two continents register.

Tournament Format

The event will be played using the Swiss System. The number of rounds will be decided after the final registration count is confirmed.

Time Controls

Rapid Chess

  • 15 minutes per player
  • 10-second increment from move one

Blitz Chess

  • 3 minutes per player
  • 2-second increment from move one

Important Registration Information

Players who require a Nigerian visa must request an invitation letter by June 30, 2026. The registration deadline for both participants and accompanying persons is also June 30, 2026.

With multiple rating categories and both rapid and blitz formats, the FIDE World Amateur Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2026 promises to be an exciting global event for amateur chess enthusiasts.
