Andrew Hong Wins Aktobe Open 2026 – Vladimir Dvorkovich Memorial

American Grandmaster Andrew Hong won the Aktobe Open 2026 – Vladimir Dvorkovich Memorial (Masters) with an impressive score of 7 out of 9.

The tournament attracted 210 players from 21 countries, making it one of the strongest international chess events of the year. Participants came from nations including India, the United States, China, Serbia, Kazakhstan, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and many others.

The event was organized by FIDE, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Kazakhstan, the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, and the Akimat of the Aktobe Region. Games were played at the ACE Tennis Centre in Aktobe, Kazakhstan.

Strong Competition in the Masters Section

The chess festival featured two separate nine-round Swiss tournaments with classical time controls. The Masters section welcomed 81 players rated 2400 and above, while the Open section featured 129 players rated below 2400.

The total prize fund was ₸50,000,000 (around $102,000). The Masters champion received ₸9,000,000, while the Open winner earned ₸1,350,000.

As an official event of the FIDE Circuit 2026–27, the Masters tournament was highly competitive from start to finish. Heading into the final round, Andrew Hong, Wang Hao, and Alexey Sarana were tied for first place with 6 points from 8 games.

The final round proved decisive. Hong defeated Sarana in a crucial encounter, while Wang Hao lost to Kazakhstan’s Denis Makhnev. These results allowed Hong to finish clear first and secure the title.

Battle for the Podium

Three players finished tied for second place with 6.5/9:

  • IM Daniyal Sapenov (Kazakhstan)
  • GM Daniil Dubov (FIDE)
  • GM Mahdi Gholami Orimi (Iran)

After applying Buchholz tiebreaks, Sapenov claimed second place and Dubov completed the podium in third.

Best Female Players

Polina Shuvalova emerged as the top-performing female player in the Masters section. The leading female players were:

  1. Polina Shuvalova (FIDE)
  2. Liya Kurmangaliyeva (Kazakhstan)
  3. Harika Dronavalli (India)

Kazakh Players Dominate the Open Section

The Open tournament was dominated by local players from Kazakhstan. Three Kazakh competitors finished on 7.5/9, with tiebreaks deciding the final standings.

Seventeen-year-old FM Alan Petukhov from Aktobe successfully defended his title and became the Open champion for the second consecutive year. Kair Beristenov secured second place, while Arlen Abdrashev finished third.

The Aktobe Open 2026 once again showcased exciting chess, strong international participation, and outstanding performances from both established stars and rising talents.
