23rd ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships – Coming to Penang, Malaysia!

The 23rd ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships will be held in Penang, Malaysia, from July 1 to July 11, 2025.

This exciting international event is organized by the Penang Chess Association under the ASEAN Chess Confederation and the Malaysian Chess Federation.

Who Can Join?

Chess players from ASEAN countries are invited:

  • Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste.

Players from partner countries are also welcome:

  • Australia, China, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, and the United States.

Age Categories

There are 16 junior categories:

  • Under 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 – each with Open and Girls divisions.

  • Players must be within the age limit as of January 1, 2025.

There are 4 senior categories:

  • 50+ and 65+ for both Open and Women.

  • Seniors 50+ must be born in 1975 or earlier.

  • Seniors 65+ must be born in 1960 or earlier.

The organizers may merge categories if there are not enough players.

Time Controls

  • Standard Chess: 90 minutes per player, with 30 seconds increment per move.

  • Rapid Chess: 25 minutes per player.

  • Blitz Chess: 5 minutes per player.

Awards & Medals

  • Medals for the top three players in each category.

  • In case of a tie, up to five medals may be awarded.

  • Team medals are based on combined scores of top three players from each country.

  • Tie-breaks will be used to decide winners when needed.

Tournament Venue

The championship will be held at the Main Ballroom of
BERJAYA PENANG HOTEL,
1-Stop Midlands Park, Jalan Burmah, Penang, Malaysia.

Accommodation

All players and accompanying persons must stay at one of the two official 4-star hotels listed in the tournament regulations.

Visa Information

Please check your visa requirements through the Malaysian Immigration Department.
Participants from countries not listed above should apply for a visa online.
