2nd FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities reaches its midpoint
The 2nd FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities in Astana has reached its halfway mark. With Round 3 underway, excitement fills the air. Every game shows courage, teamwork, and passion for chess.
The first ceremonial move of the round was made by Dinara Naumova, Member of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, alongside Akaki Iashvili, FIDE Special Tasks Director.
Naumova praised the positive atmosphere, saying the players were confident and full of team spirit. “It’s an honour for Kazakhstan to host this event. I wish every player success and the strength to never give up,” she said.
Her words reflected the heart of this Olympiad — unity, resilience, and joy.
Strength and spirit of the players
Every participant here has an inspiring story. Each move they make represents focus, persistence, and the victory of human spirit.
Luisa Molina from Team Colombia said, “This Olympiad has been one of the best experiences we’ve ever had! It’s not just a tournament — it’s a place for inclusion.”
Aryan Joshi from India, playing his first Olympiad, shared, “This is my first time here, and it feels amazing. Despite challenges, everyone is friendly and happy. We are not disabled — we are differently able.”
Coach Niloy Chakraborty, who works with players with hearing impairments, added, “I’ve helped many students find opportunities. Here, everyone participates equally — that’s what makes it special.”
From Angola, Eugenio Campos of the IPCA team said, “I started chess at age five. It’s been part of my life ever since. This event gives players with disabilities the chance to compete internationally — I’m thankful to FIDE and the Kazakhstan Chess Federation.”
IM Igor Yarmonov from Ukraine, a five-time IPCA World Champion, also stands out. His wife, Galina, shared their gratitude: “Everything here is wonderful — the atmosphere, the organization, and the volunteers. Chess has helped Igor overcome many challenges and connect with the world.”
Even beyond playing, Igor continues to serve the chess community as a FIDE judge for chess composition.
Inspiration beyond the board
When asked about their favorite chess players, participants named legends like Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, and Mikhail Tal. But one answer stood out — Jesús Osorio from Panama said, “My favorite chess player is not famous. It’s my friend Osvaldo Herrera Graham.” A touching reminder that true inspiration often comes from those around us — our friends, coaches, and loved ones who share our passion.
Battle for the top
Round 3 also featured some thrilling games. In a key match between Syed Ejaz Husain (Bangladesh) and Ben Kaufmann (Germany), White launched a spectacular attack. After a mistake with 20…Ne6??, White struck with 21. Ne5! and then 23. Nxh6!! — a stunning sacrifice that led to checkmate with 26. Ng6#.
A brilliant example of chess and life — sometimes, courage and creativity lead to victory.
Looking ahead
As the Olympiad moves past its midpoint, the energy in Astana continues to grow. This event proves that chess is more than a game — it’s about inclusion, strength, and human connection. Players from around the world are showing that true champions are not defined by physical ability, but by spirit and determination.
