Nodirbek Abdusattorov wins Tata Steel Chess Masters 2026
Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov has won the Tata Steel Chess Masters 2026. This was his fourth attempt in this prestigious event. After 13 tough rounds in Wijk aan Zee, he finally lifted the title. His victory marks a major milestone in his career.
The 88th Tata Steel Chess Tournament took place from January 16 to February 1, 2026. It is often called the “Wimbledon of Chess.” The event featured elite grandmasters, young rising stars, and many amateur players. Chess fans from around the world followed the games closely.
A dramatic final weekend
The race for first place was intense. Before the last round, five players still had a chance to win. They were Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Javokhir Sindarov, Hans Niemann, Vincent Keymer, and Jorden van Foreest. The tension was high until the final move.
In previous years, Abdusattorov came very close to winning. He performed strongly but missed the top spot. In 2026, he stayed calm and consistent. This time, he finished as the champion. His hard work and patience paid off.
Words from the tournament director
Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg praised Abdusattorov. He said that Nodirbek played at a very high level throughout the event. He also invited him to defend his title in 2027 in Wijk aan Zee.
Andy Woodward wins the Challengers
In the Tata Steel Challengers section, Andy Woodward emerged as the winner. His victory earned him a place in the Tata Steel Masters 2027. This follows the tournament’s tradition of promoting top Challengers players.
Vasyl Ivanchuk and Aydin Suleymanli also fought hard for the title. The competition remained close until the final round.
Global audience and new features
The tournament attracted hundreds of thousands of live viewers every day. At peak moments, nearly one million fans were watching online.
For the first time, the Tata Steel Chess Rapid Tournament was introduced at Hotel Hoge Duin. The event also included amateur tournaments, family chess programs, and live commentary sessions at Café de Zon.
