The FIDE has officially released the regulations for the World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2026. The event will take place in Hong Kong from June 16 to June 22, 2026.

After successful editions in Düsseldorf, Astana, and London, the tournament returns with its popular format. This format mixes top grandmasters and amateur players in the same teams. It creates a unique and exciting competition for both players and fans.

Unique Team Format

Each team match is played on six boards. Teams must follow specific composition rules. This ensures a balance between elite professionals and club-level players.

The event will be played in two parts:

  • World Team Rapid Championship (first)

  • World Team Blitz Championship (later in the week)

  • Companies

  • Teams of six players

  • Players must never have reached a FIDE rating of 2000 or higher

Format and Time Control

  • Time control: 15 minutes + 10-second increment

  • Two-stage competition format

  • Final matches will decide the champion

This gives amateur players a chance to compete in a global chess festival environment.

A Global Chess Festival

By hosting both events together, Hong Kong will become the center of world chess for a week. Players from across the globe will gather for high-speed team battles.
