GM Bojan Maksimović won the 2026 Serbian Individual Chess Championship and claimed his first national title. The 20th edition of the Serbian Chess Championship was held in Senta from June 13 to June 21. The tournament featured 10 players competing in a round-robin format.

This year’s event also made history. For the first time in the open section, a female player participated in the championship. National team player Sofia Pogorelskikh competed against the country’s top chess stars.

Bojan Maksimović started the tournament strongly by winning his first three games in a row. He quickly took the lead and stayed at the top throughout the event. The Serbian Grandmaster secured the championship title with one round remaining and finished with an impressive score of 6.5 points out of 9.

After winning the tournament, Maksimović said he hoped to finish in the top three before the event started. He also admitted he was unsure about his form. However, he played excellent chess during the competition and took advantage of important mistakes made by his opponents.

IM Stefan Tadić finished in second place, just half a point behind the champion. GM Mihail Brjakin claimed third place with 5.5/9. The top three players also qualified for the next Serbian Individual Chess Championship.

The trophies and medals were presented by Goran Vlajković, Vice President of the Chess Federation of Serbia.
