GM Diego Flores has made history by winning the 100th Argentine Chess Championship, securing his eighth national title. He finished with an impressive 8.5/11, becoming the only undefeated player in the entire tournament. With this victory, he equals the legendary Miguel Najdorf’s record for the most titles in the event’s history.

The championship celebrated its 100th edition with a 12-player round-robin tournament held at Buenos Aires City Hall from November 25 to December 5, 2025.

Flores started the event as the top seed and lived up to that expectation. After two quiet draws in the beginning, he shifted gears, won three consecutive games, and took the sole lead. He never let it go.

The final round brought a big matchup: Flores vs. Federico Perez Ponsa, the 2021 champion and his nearest rival. Flores had a full-point lead, played safely, and sealed the championship after a draw on move 37.

Federico Perez Ponsa finished second with 7.5/11. GMs Diego Valerga and Leonardo Tristan both scored 7/11, sharing third place, with Valerga taking the final podium spot due to more wins.

Young talent IM Faustino Oro delivered a strong performance as well, finishing with 6.5/11, tying for fifth place.

Final Standings (Top 5)

  1. GM Diego Flores – 8.5

  2. GM Federico Perez Ponsa – 7.5

  3. GM Diego Valerga – 7

  4. GM Leonardo Tristan – 7

  5. IM Faustino Oro – 6.5
