FIDE Candidates 2026: Sindarov Dominates, Muzychuk Leads at Halfway Stage

The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 has reached its halfway mark, and the battle is getting intense.

Sindarov Takes Control

Javokhir Sindarov continues his excellent form. He drew his game against Anish Giri and now leads the tournament with 6 out of 7 points.  He is ahead by 1.5 points over Fabiano Caruana, who is in second place.

Meanwhile, Wei Yi scored his first win of the tournament in style. He defeated Andrey Esipenko with a brilliant attacking game.

Wei Yi’s Brilliant Attack

Wei Yi punished his opponent’s weak opening play. He created a powerful attack and found a stunning move: 22…Rc4! – an amazing exchange sacrifice.

From there, he kept increasing the pressure. Soon, the position became completely winning. The game ended with a beautiful checkmate combination. A truly world-class attacking performance!

Sindarov Holds Against Giri

Sindarov tried hard to win against Giri. The game followed a well-known opening line.

However, Giri defended perfectly. He built a solid fortress and secured a draw, even with material disadvantage.

Caruana vs Praggnanandhaa Ends in Draw

R Praggnanandhaa faced Caruana in an important game. Caruana played the Slav Defence. He got a small advantage, including a strong knight.

But Praggnanandhaa stayed calm. He defended well and equalized the position, leading to a draw.

Nakamura Shows Fighting Spirit

Hikaru Nakamura faced Matthias Bluebaum. Bluebaum had excellent preparation and gained a big time advantage. Nakamura was under pressure.

Still, Nakamura played with incredible accuracy (around 99%). He managed to hold the game to a draw, showing his class.

At the halfway stage:

  • Sindarov is the clear leader
  • Caruana is chasing behind
  • Other players are still in the fight

Women’s Candidates 2026: Muzychuk Leads

In the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, the competition is equally exciting.

Anna Muzychuk leads with 4.5/7. R Vaishali is just half a point behind after winning her game.

Vaishali’s Comeback Win

Vaishali defeated Tan Zhongyi. Tan had a winning position at one point. But one big mistake changed everything: 37…Ra1??

Vaishali responded brilliantly and turned the game around. She won a piece and secured a fantastic victory.

Muzychuk Holds the Lead

Muzychuk drew her game against Bibisara Assaubayeva. The game ended quickly in a draw. This result helped Muzychuk stay as the sole leader.

Long Battles and Tough Fights

Aleksandra Goryachkina vs Zhu Jiner was a high-quality game. It lasted 70 moves with near-perfect accuracy. Both players showed amazing precision. The game ended in a draw.

Another marathon game was played between Divya Deshmukh and Kateryna Lagno. They battled for 135 moves! Despite Divya’s strong efforts, Lagno defended brilliantly. The game ended in a draw.

Rest Day and Activities

It was not just about games. Fans also enjoyed exciting activities. Viswanathan Anand conducted a training session. GM Jacob Aagaard gave a lecture for fans.

The event is being held at the beautiful Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort.

What’s Next?

The players now head into a rest day. Round 8 will begin soon as the second half of the tournament starts. The race for the top spot is far from over!
