FIDE World School Chess Championship 2025 Kicks Off in Serbia

The FIDE World School Chess Championship 2025 has officially begun in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia. Known as a hub for chess and tourism, the event runs from March 19 to March 29, 2025.

Grand Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony featured a lively performance by the children’s choir “Vrnjačke Iskrice.” President Andrija Jorgić warmly welcomed players and guests on behalf of the Chess Federation of Serbia.

FIDE World School Chess

FIDE delegate Özgür Solakoğlu praised the Chess Federation of Serbia and its president for successfully integrating chess into schools across the country.

The Mayor of Vrnjačka Banja, Boban Đurović, emphasized the city’s dedication to hosting major chess events, marking its third consecutive year of doing so.

Minister of Sports Zoran Gajić delivered an inspiring speech, highlighting Serbia’s deep chess heritage.

Competition Officially Begins

To mark the start of the tournament, Mr. Gajić and Mr. Đurović made the symbolic first move. Chief Arbiter Nenad Dorić then officially declared the competition open.

A Global Chess Event

This year’s championship has drawn 461 participants from 43 countries. Players compete in six age categories:
U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17, with separate events for Open and Girls divisions.
