Jesper Thybo Wins His First Danish Chess Championship Title!

Grandmaster Jesper Thybo has finally done it! After finishing second four years in a row, he won the 2025 Danish Chess Championship Title— and he did it in style, securing victory with one round to spare.

The tournament was held from April 9–17 in Svendborg, a charming town that has hosted the event for nine straight years. This year’s edition was a 10-player round-robin event with classical time control.

Thybo had been chasing this title for a long time. He was runner-up in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. But in 2025, he finally got over the line, showing his class and determination.

He took the lead in Round 4 and never looked back. Jesper finished the tournament with five wins in a row, scoring a dominant 8 out of 9 points.

The Danish Chess Union focused strongly on fair play this year. President Poul Jacobse made it clear that no player should feel cheated. There were tighter controls on player movements inside the hall to ensure a clean tournament.

IM Filip Boe Olsen finished in second place with 6.5 points. He was just half a point short of earning a Grandmaster norm. IM Martin Haubro, the 2022 champion, took third place with 6 points.

Final Standings (Top 3):

  1. GM Jesper Søndergaard Thybo – 8/9

  2. IM Filip Boe Olsen – 6.5/9

  3. IM Martin Haubro – 6/9

It was an exciting and well-organized championship that showcased the best of Danish chess. Congratulations to Jesper Thybo on his first national title — a well-deserved win!
