Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has won Norway Chess 2026 after an unforgettable finish to the tournament. The 19-year-old star defeated Vincent Keymer in the final round to secure the title. With that victory, Praggnanandhaa completed an amazing streak of four consecutive classical wins.

His winning run included victories against Alireza Firouzja, Magnus Carlsen, World Champion D Gukesh, and Vincent Keymer. The remarkable comeback helped him finish ahead of Wesley So and claim one of the biggest titles of his career.

From Last Place to Champion

Just four rounds before the end of the tournament, Praggnanandhaa was sitting at the bottom of the standings. After losing to Wesley So in Round 6, he trailed the tournament leader by 5.5 points.

At that stage, winning the event seemed almost impossible. However, Pragg never gave up. He continued fighting in every game and produced one of the greatest comebacks seen in Norway Chess history.

Speaking after the tournament, Praggnanandhaa revealed that he was simply focused on playing good chess and not thinking about the title race.

A conversation with his mother before Round 7 also proved memorable. She told him that a new month had started and that he would play well. Pragg then went on to win four games in a row.

Praggnanandhaa Defeats Keymer in Final Round

The final obstacle standing between Praggnanandhaa and the title was German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer. Keymer entered the game unbeaten in classical chess and was having an excellent tournament.

The game remained balanced for a long time, but Pragg slowly increased the pressure. A critical mistake by Keymer allowed the Indian star to take control of the position. Praggnanandhaa converted his advantage with great precision and secured the full three points.

The victory guaranteed him the Norway Chess 2026 title.

Magnus Carlsen Praises Praggnanandhaa

Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen was impressed by Praggnanandhaa’s achievement. After learning about Pragg’s victory, Carlsen described the performance as incredible and praised his fighting spirit.

The Norwegian superstar highlighted how difficult it is to win four consecutive classical games against such strong opposition. Praggnanandhaa also achieved something special during the event by defeating Carlsen in both of their classical encounters.

Wesley So Finishes Runner-Up

Wesley So entered the final round as the tournament leader and still controlled his own destiny. A classical victory against Alireza Firouzja would have secured him the title.

However, their classical game ended in a draw. So later defeated Firouzja in the Armageddon tiebreak, but it was not enough to stop Praggnanandhaa from overtaking him. So finished in second place, while Firouzja secured third.

Carlsen Ends Tournament With Victory

Magnus Carlsen finished his home tournament on a positive note. The former World Champion defeated reigning World Champion D Gukesh in the final round.

It was Carlsen’s second classical victory over Gukesh during the tournament. The win helped Carlsen climb to fourth place in the final standings. For Gukesh, it was a difficult event as he finished at the bottom of the table after suffering several tough losses.
