Qualification Paths for the FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026
The International Chess Federation, FIDE, has officially announced how players can qualify for the FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026.
This new qualification system connects Freestyle Chess with the regular women’s tournament calendar. It creates clear and fair opportunities for:

A total of 8 qualification spots are available through different paths.
1️⃣ Freestyle Chess Wild Card – 1 Spot
One place will be decided through a special exhibition match between:

Bibisara Assaubayeva

Alexandra Kosteniuk
This match will take place alongside the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship in February 2026.
If Assaubayeva qualifies through another path, her wild card spot will go to the next eligible player in the FIDE Women’s Standard rating list (as of May 1, 2026).
2️⃣ Grenke Freestyle Open – 3 Spots
Three places will go to the best-performing women at the:

Grenke Freestyle Open (April 2026)
This gives strong tournament performers a direct route to the World Championship.
3️⃣ Elite Player Qualifier – 1 Spot
This special qualifier includes:

8 players from the Women’s Candidates

The top 4 players in the FIDE Women’s Standard rating list (as of May 1, 2026)
-
Only those who have not already qualified
This ensures that top-rated players get a fair chance to compete.
4️⃣ Online Qualifier – 1 Spot
One spot will be decided through an online tournament in June 2026.
This event is open to all titled players worldwide, making it accessible and competitive.
5️⃣ Over-the-Board (OTB) Qualifiers – 2 Spots
Two places will be decided through over-the-board Freestyle tournaments.
Organisers can apply to host open events in the Freestyle/Chess960 format.
If no organisers apply by March 31, 2026, these spots may be moved to online qualifiers instead.
