The Norway Chess 2026 tournament concluded in spectacular fashion in Oslo, Norway, after 11 days of world-class chess action from May 25 to June 5.

The event featured two elite tournaments running side by side – Norway Chess and Norway Chess Women. Both events had six players competing in a double round-robin format with equal prize funds, reflecting the tournament’s commitment to gender equality in chess.

One of the unique features of Norway Chess is its scoring system. Whenever a classical game ends in a draw, players immediately compete in an Armageddon game to decide the winner. This ensures that every round produces a decisive result.

Praggnanandhaa Wins Norway Chess 2026

Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu emerged as the Norway Chess 2026 champion after a brilliant performance in the final round.

Going into the last round, Praggnanandhaa trailed tournament leader Wesley So by half a point. Knowing that only a win would give him a chance at the title, he delivered when it mattered most.

Playing with the white pieces against Vincent Keymer, Praggnanandhaa secured a crucial classical victory. The win earned him three points and lifted his final score to 18 points, enough to claim first place and the championship trophy.

Wesley So entered the final day as the tournament leader. He drew his classical game against Alireza Firouzja before winning the Armageddon tiebreak. The result gave him 1.5 points, but it was not enough to stay ahead of Praggnanandhaa. So finished second with 17 points.

Firouzja completed the podium after another strong performance and secured third place.

Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen finished his campaign on a positive note. The Norwegian star defeated World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in their final-round classical encounter.
