European Chess Union Launches European Chess Super League 2027

The European Chess Union (ECU) has officially announced the European Chess Super League. This new tournament aims to change the future of club chess in Europe.

The first edition of the league will be held in 2027. The exact dates and location will be announced later. The event will have a minimum budget of €500,000.

A new era for European club chess

The European Chess Super League will feature eight of the strongest chess clubs in Europe. These elite teams will compete for a total prize fund of €300,000. The winning club will receive €110,000.

The league is designed to showcase top-level chess. Fans can expect exciting matches and world-class players. Innovation and sporting excellence will be at the heart of the event.

Key features of the European Chess Super League

Elite participation Eight clubs will take part in the league. This includes the top four teams from the European Chess Club Cup. The highest-rated club will also qualify. The organizer’s team will get a place as well. Two wildcard spots will be given by the ECU. These wildcards are open to clubs from Europe and around the world.

Tournament format

The competition will be played as a 7-round round-robin event. Each team will play with six boards. Two reserve players are allowed per team.

Prize fund

  • The total prize fund is €300,000.
  • The champion will earn €110,000.

Media and sponsorship

The main partner and sponsor of the league is the SUPER Foundation. The foundation is based in Bucharest, Romania. It is also a major supporter of top chess events like the Grand Chess Tour.

The ECU will keep all commercial, media, and broadcasting rights for the Super League.
