FIDE Announces Selected Events for Open Aid Project 2026

FIDE has officially announced the open tournaments selected to receive financial support through the 2026 Open Aid Project.
The initiative helps strengthen chess tournaments around the world by providing financial assistance to selected events. The chosen tournaments were evaluated based on several factors, including classical time controls, tournament strength, past history, geographical diversity, and prize fund structure. Special attention was also given to events that support women, veterans, and players from developing countries.
A Project Born During the Pandemic
The Open Aid Project was first launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, many chess tournaments faced serious financial challenges, while professional players struggled with fewer opportunities to compete.
FIDE created the project to support both organizers and players during that difficult period. Since then, it has grown into an important annual initiative that supports the global chess community.
Support for Open Tournaments Worldwide
The 2026 edition of the program is being organized by FIDE with support from Freedom Holding Corp.

The project will provide assistance to selected open tournaments taking place between June and December 2026. Tournament organizers from different parts of the world submitted applications, and the selected events successfully met FIDE’s requirements for accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainable tournament organization.
FIDE has also stated that the announced list is not yet final, as some applications are still under review.
FIDE President Highlights Importance of Open Events
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized the importance of open tournaments for the growth of chess worldwide.
He noted that the Open Aid Project started during the pandemic when many events needed urgent financial support to survive. Today, the initiative continues to create opportunities for players, organizers, and local chess communities across different countries and regions.
According to Dvorkovich, supporting these tournaments helps strengthen the global chess calendar and contributes to the long-term development of the sport.
Strengthening the Global Chess Community
Through the Open Aid Project, FIDE continues its commitment to supporting tournament organizers and maintaining a strong international chess circuit.
The program ensures that quality playing opportunities remain available to chess players around the world while encouraging the growth of chess at both local and international levels.
