Serbian Chess Championship 2024: Ivanisevic and Pogorelskikh Crowned Champions
The 2024 Serbian Chess Championship crowned two new national champions: GM Ivan Ivanisevic in the Open section and IM Sofia Pogorelskikh in the Women’s section.
This prestigious tournament ran from May 31 to June 6, with the Open event held in Pirot and the Women’s event in Palic. Both were round-robin formats played with classical time control.
Ivan Ivanisevic Wins His Fifth National Title
GM Ivan Ivanisevic, the second seed, played a solid tournament and emerged as the new Serbian Champion. He took the lead after scoring three back-to-back wins in Rounds 5 to 7.
Heading into the final round, he was just half a point ahead of GM Suat Atalik, whom he had already defeated earlier in the tournament. A final-round draw against GM Misa Pap secured Ivanisevic a total of 6.5 points out of 9.
Atalik also won his last game, which brought him level with Ivanisevic. However, Ivanisevic won the title thanks to a better Koya tiebreak score. Impressively, he was the only unbeaten player in the entire tournament.
GM Robert Marcus, the top seed, finished third to complete the podium.
Sofia Pogorelskikh Claims Her First Title
The 2024 Serbian Chess Championship Women’s Championship was filled with intense competition. IM Sofia Pogorelskikh may have lost two games, but she bounced back with five impressive wins.
She finished in clear first place, just half a point ahead of two former champions:
-
WGM Irina Chelushkina (2024 winner)
-
WGM Marina Gajcin (2023 winner)
Chelushkina claimed the silver medal based on the Koya system, while Gajcin secured bronze.
This was Pogorelskikh’s first national title, marking a major milestone in her career.
