Grandmaster Aleksandar Indjic from Serbia is the winner of the Baku Open 2025 (Group A). As the top seed, he lived up to expectations and finished first.

The Baku Open 2025 was a major international chess festival with three groups: A, B, and C. Each group followed a 9-round Swiss format with classical time control. Around 700 players from 16 countries took part. The total prize fund was $55,000, with $12,000 going to the Group A winner.

Early Lead and Turning Point

Local star Mahammad Muradli, seeded fifth, had a strong start with four wins in a row. But in Round 5, Indjic defeated Muradli in a key game. After that, Indjic took the lead and never looked back. The 2024 European Champion stayed unbeaten and scored 7 out of 9 to take the title.

Podium Finishers

Baadur Jobava from Georgia also finished unbeaten and tied with Turkey’s Vahap Sanal—both just half a point behind Indjic. Jobava claimed second place thanks to his opponents’ higher average rating.
