Tris Ann Richards Becomes New Chair of FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess
FIDE has officially appointed Tris Ann Richards as the new Chair of the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess. She takes over the position from Anastasia Sorokina, who stepped down after years of dedicated service to women’s chess.
Tris Ann Richards is already a respected name in the international chess community. Before becoming Chair, she served as a Councillor in the Commission for Women’s Chess. During that time, she helped lead important projects and contributed to the growth of women’s chess worldwide.
Apart from her work with FIDE, Richards is also the President of the Saint Lucia Chess Federation. She is among the few women currently leading a national chess federation.
Richards is deeply involved in chess in many roles. She is a Woman Candidate Master (WCM), a FIDE Arbiter, and also a certified chess instructor. Her experience as a player, official, and teacher makes her a strong leader for the Commission.
In 2022, Richards received the FIDE Women’s Award in the Game Changer category for the Americas. The award recognized her efforts in promoting and developing chess across the region.
Speaking about her appointment, Richards said she feels honored to take on the responsibility. She thanked Dana Reizniece and Anastasia Sorokina for their leadership and mentorship. Richards also said she is excited to continue working toward better opportunities for women in chess around the world.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich also praised the appointment. He thanked Anastasia Sorokina for her valuable contribution to women’s chess over the years. He added that Richards’ experience, passion, and dedication make her an excellent choice to lead the Commission.
FIDE congratulated Tris Ann Richards on her new role and expressed confidence in her ability to further strengthen women’s chess globally.
The organization also thanked Anastasia Sorokina for her hard work and leadership. During her tenure, she helped create more opportunities for girls and women in the global chess community.
