The 2026 FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Championships is shaping up to be one of the biggest chess events of the year. With less than a month left before the tournament begins in Hong Kong, the official team lineups have now been revealed. More than 300 players from 43 teams will participate in the fourth edition of this exciting event.
WR Chess Returns as Tournament Favourite
Defending champions WR Chess will once again enter the tournament as the biggest favourites.

The team has already won the Rapid title in 2023 and the Blitz titles in both 2024 and 2025. Their strongest weapon is World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, who remains the only player above the 2800 rating mark.

The 2026 World Team Rapid and Blitz Championships will take place in Hong Kong from June 16 to June 22. The games will be played at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
Rapid Event
- Dates: June 17–19
- Format: 12-round Swiss
- Time Control: 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment
Blitz Event
- Dates: June 20–21
- Format: Pool stage followed by 16-team knockout
- Time Control: 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment
The total prize fund is an impressive €500,000.
- Rapid Prize Fund: €310,000
- Blitz Prize Fund: €190,000
The Rapid champions will earn €110,000, while the Blitz champions will receive €75,000.
Amateur Teams Also Get Their Chance
A major new addition in 2026 is the inaugural FIDE World Team Amateur Rapid Chess Cup.
This event will run alongside the main championship and aims to bring amateur and elite chess players closer together.
Brief History of the Event
The FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Championships started in Düsseldorf in 2023. Initially, the tournament only featured Rapid chess. Blitz was added in 2024, turning it into a two-format championship.
