The first classical event of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour started peacefully in Bucharest, Romania. All five games in Round 1 ended in draws. However, the game between Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa and Alireza Firouzja was full of drama and excitement.

Alireza had a clearly better position in the middlegame and looked close to victory. But Praggnanandhaa defended brilliantly under pressure and escaped with a draw after reaching an equal rook endgame.
