Pranav and Shukhman Win 2025 World Junior Chess Championship in Montenegro
The 2025 World Junior Chess Championship has come to an exciting end in Petrovac, Montenegro. Over the past thirteen days, nearly 260 young chess players from 67 countries competed for the prestigious title.
Pranav Venkatesh Wins the Open Section
Indian Grandmaster Pranav Venkatesh (second seed) claimed victory in the open section with an impressive 9/11 score. He remained undefeated throughout the tournament, achieving a rating performance of 2721.
Slovenian IM Matic Lavrencic and Norwegian GM Amar Elham tied for second place with 8.5/11 points. However, Lavrencic secured the silver medal due to a better Buchholz score (a tiebreaker system).
Anna Shukhman Triumphs in the Girls’ Section
In the girls’ category, Anna Shukhman (FIDE) emerged as the champion with a dominant 9/11 score. She finished the tournament on a high note, winning her last five games in a row.
Azerbaijan’s Ayan Allahverdiyeva finished second with 8/11 points, while top seed Lu Miaoyi from China secured third place.

A Historic Event for Montenegro
This tournament was a historic moment for Montenegro, as it was the first time the country hosted such a prestigious FIDE event. Jovan Milovic, President of the Montenegro Chess Federation, expressed his gratitude to all players, organizers, and supporters for making the event a success.
