World Youth Chess Olympiad U-16: Exciting Start in Barranquilla

The World Youth Chess Olympiad U-16 has kicked off in Barranquilla, Colombia, bringing together young talents from more than 45 countries. The atmosphere is full of energy as the brightest chess stars of tomorrow battle for glory.

Standings After Round 2

After two rounds, several teams have shown strong performances and remain undefeated:

  • Kazakhstan 1 & 2 – showing consistency on every board.

  • Georgia and Canada – both with back-to-back wins.

  • India, FIDE 1, FIDE 2, Cuba 1, Cuba 2, China, Uzbekistan, Paraguay, Peru 1, and four Colombian teams – all off to a perfect 4/4 start.

This large group of leaders sets the stage for thrilling clashes in the coming rounds.

Featured Match of the Day

One of the most exciting games was between WGM Anna Shukman (FIDE) and Peru’s rising star Achatada Mandujano. The game was intense and ended in a draw, highlighting the high level of competition at the Olympiad.

Latin American Power

Local teams are making their mark. Colombia 1, Colombia 2, Colombia 7, and Colombia 13 are all performing well and staying competitive against top international squads. Other Latin American teams, including Paraguay, Peru, Brazil, and Cuba, are also earning valuable points.

More Than Just Chess

The Olympiad is not only about competition. It’s also a cultural celebration, bringing players from around the world together. Barranquilla is fast becoming a global hub for youth chess, hosting some of the brightest young minds of the game.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich made the ceremonial first move in the match between Georgia and FIDE, and shared his vision:

I hope we will one day have the main Chess Olympiad in the Americas. Events like this help young players from all regions—including smaller chess nations—to grow and gain experience.
