Norway Chess Launches New FIDE-Approved World Championship
Chess is stepping into a new era! Norway Chess has announced a brand-new global event — The Total Chess World Championship Tour — officially approved by FIDE (International Chess Federation).
This new championship will bring together the world’s best players across three exciting formats — Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz — to crown the ultimate FIDE World Combined Champion.
A New Kind of World Championship
The Total Chess World Championship Tour is unlike anything seen before. Each year, there will be four tournaments hosted in cities across the world. Players will battle it out in all three formats, proving who truly is “The Total Chess Player.”
According to Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess, “We expect this to become one of the most prestigious events in the chess calendar.”

Finding the “Total Chess Player”
Madland explained that the vision behind this championship is to find the most versatile and complete chess player — one who can adapt to multiple time controls with skill, speed, and precision.
The final event will decide who becomes the official FIDE World Combined Champion.
A Spectacle for Fans Worldwide
Norway Chess promises an entertaining and high-tech experience with innovative broadcasting, fast-paced games, and engaging coverage designed to attract both chess fans and newcomers.
Madland added, “We want to make chess more exciting, dynamic, and accessible to a broader audience than ever before.”
Big Rewards on the Line
The prize fund is impressive — $750,000 for each of the first three events and $450,000 for the grand finals. On top of that, bonus rewards will be given for top performances at individual events and across the full tour.
FIDE’s Support and Vision
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed full support, calling it a major step forward for modern chess.
He said, “Chess is already one of the world’s most popular games, but its potential for growth is huge. The Total Chess World Championship Tour gives players a new goal and fans a fresh, faster format to enjoy.”
Dvorkovich emphasized that this new event complements the traditional World Chess Championship — adding excitement while keeping the spirit of classical chess alive.
The Future of Chess
Norway Chess is now inviting host cities, investors, and partners to be part of this revolutionary championship.
With its innovative approach, massive prize fund, and official FIDE backing, the Total Chess World Championship Tour could redefine the way the world experiences chess.
