Round 6 of Norway Chess: Gukesh Shocks Carlsen With Stunning Comeback
Round 6 of Norway Chess 2025 was full of drama, surprises, and armageddon thrillers.
World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju pulled off the biggest surprise of the day. He defeated Magnus Carlsen in a classical game—his first-ever classical win against the former world number one!
Carlsen had a nearly perfect game and was close to winning. But a single mistake in time pressure turned the tables. Gukesh grabbed the opportunity, played accurately, and snatched the win.
Even Gukesh couldn’t believe it. “99 out of 100 times I would lose this game,” he said. “It was just a lucky day!”
This victory means the tournament is wide open again. Carlsen no longer has a big lead.
Other Round 6 Highlights
🔸 Caruana Beats Nakamura in Armageddon
In a rematch of top American stars, Fabiano Caruana held a solid draw in the classical game against Hikaru Nakamura. But in armageddon, he defended carefully and earned his first armageddon win of the tournament. He credited his recent collaboration with GM Aryan Tari for creative opening ideas.
🔸 Arjun Punishes Wei in Opening Trap
GM Arjun Erigaisi had a clean mini-match win over GM Wei Yi. After a calm draw in the classical game, Arjun capitalized on Wei’s early blunder in armageddon. It was over quickly after Wei dropped a piece.
Women’s Tournament: Armageddon Mayhem Continues
