GM Bjorn Moller Ochsner is the new Danish Chess Champion. The 31-year-old from Aarhus secured his second national title after a thrilling finish.

He defeated IM Filip Boe Olsen in a rapid tiebreak to claim the crown.

Tournament Overview

The Danish Championship 2026 was held from March 28 to April 6 in Svendborg. This small town has now hosted the event for ten consecutive years.

The tournament featured eight different sections. The main event, called the Landskampklasse, included:

  • 10 players
  • Round-robin format
  • Classical time control

Strong Competition Despite Absences

Some top Danish players, including Jesper Thybo (2025 champion), did not participate. Even so, the tournament remained highly competitive.

Ochsner started strong and took an early lead. However, he later suffered two defeats, which cost him the top spot. Meanwhile, Filip Boe Olsen moved into the lead before the final round. He was:

  • Half a point ahead of IM Viktor Haarmark Nielsen
  • One full point ahead of Ochsner

Dramatic Final Round

The final round brought intense action.

  • Ochsner faced Olsen in a decisive match
  • Nielsen played against FM Casper Liu

Ochsner delivered when it mattered most. He defeated Olsen to catch up in points. At the same time, Nielsen lost his game. He finished in joint third place with GM Boris Chatalbashev.

Tiebreak Decides the Champion

With Ochsner and Olsen tied, a two-game rapid tiebreak was played. Ochsner showed great skill under pressure:

  • He won the first game with Black
  • In the second game, he reached a winning position
  • He allowed a draw, but it was enough to secure the title

Final Thoughts

Bjorn Moller Ochsner proved his strength and resilience. Despite setbacks, he made a powerful comeback when it mattered most.

His second Danish Championship title confirms his place among the top players in Denmark.
